What do Angelina Jolie, Channing Tatum, James Dean and Brigitte Bardot have in common? Well other than being famous celebrities, these actors each have a pair of some of the best lips in Hollywood! All of us want full plump lips. There are those of us lucky enough to be born with a great set of lips. But time is the great leveler and as we age lines, grooves and volume loss appears around the mouth. This march of time across our mouth is most difficult to conceal. Not only this, but once wrinkles appear around the mouth, total elimination is not an option. Does that mean we are stuck with thin, wrinkled and sad little lips? Hardly! There are several treatments available to plump, boost and smooth your lips to turn that frown upside-down!
It goes without saying, the best recommendation for keeping our lips full and flawless is to work toward aging prevention. However, if preventing the signs of aging was not your main concern in your younger years, we at JVD have a few treatments we recommend to turn back the clock.
When considering ways to keep our lips from drying we should remember three things; moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. There are many topical products that will not only moisturize, but will also stimulate collagen and elastin production. Retinol creams and products with alpha-hydroxy acid can help to soften lines and wrinkles.
Sometimes a layer of dead skin can build up over our healthy smooth skin. Dermabrasions and chemical peels can help to remove the upper layer of skin so a new layer can grow, which can diminish the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
You may have read through our previous posts concerning the importance of collagen in the skin. Laser treatments, such as photo-facial, are specifically designed to stimulate collagen naturally. This can be very effective as it stimulates your body’s natural ability to build its own collagen. There are actually several treatments which initiate this response in your body. Among those treatments to consider are Sublative Resurfacing, which uses radiofrequency to boost collagen. BTL uses focused ultrasound waves to encourage much the same response. Micro-needling is another procedure that can effectively stimulate collagen and elastin production to smooth out areas of concern.
Botox and Dysport are neuromodulators, which can relax facial muscles and smooth out lines. Anyone who knows anything about these neuromodulators knows they are most often used to ease “your elevens”, which are what we call those lines between your eyebrows. However, few have heard that this treatment can be very effective in small amounts around the mouth. The dosage may be smaller when compared to other treatment areas; even so, we at JVD have found it to be very useful to smooth fine lines around the mouth.
Dermal fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm are very effective at adding volume and definition to the lips. But did you know that this also helps to smooth out the fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth.
These options are available to you here at Jordan Valley Dermatology and we would be happy to discuss them with you in a complimentary consultation. Currently we have a combination package, which we are calling the Complete Lip Package1, is available at considerable savings. The Complete Lip Package addresses the concerns of the aging mouth.
Some of the inevitable results of aging are the lines and wrinkles in the forehead, between the brows, below the eyes and around the mouth. With the aging process, everyone will eventually get these, but because of the difference in skin structure, women are more likely to develop these problems around the mouth than men. Some of the causes are associated not only with age and repetitive muscle movement, but genetics, sun exposure and smoking as well.
Collagen and elastin diminishes as we age and the fat pads in our cheeks get smaller and separate. The collagen and elastin loss as well as gravity causes the unsupported tissue to settle in around the mouth and jowls causing deeper smile lines as well as vertical lines and wrinkles at the corners of the mouth and excess tissue in the jowl area. This creates a downturned expression that can make you look overly serious, sad or angry, even when you’re not.
Lips also thin and flatten with age and the result is loss of the youthful definition of the mouth. The chin also has obvious changes as well because of tissue and volume loss. The chin crease becomes longer and more downturned making the chin appear more pronounced.
Vertical lip lines also appear as we get older and are unavoidable because of consistent lip movement, estrogen loss as well as sun exposure. They are also referred to as “smoker’s lines” because regular pursing of the lips while smoking as well as the harmful effects associated with it are major contributors to this problem. Drinking with a straw, waxing or threading the upper lip can also be contributing factors. It should also go without saying, if you smoke, it is important to stop! Besides putting your respiratory and cardiac system at risk for disease, smoking dries your lips which deepens lines around the lips. Sorry socialite, you’ll have to kick the habit if you want a pair of showstoppers.
Collagen induction therapy, or micro-needling, is an effecting non-surgical, non-ablative treatment for all skin types and various skin conditions such as fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation, keloid, surgical and acne scars. This technique uses very fine medical grade needles to make channels into the skin creating a micro-injury. This injury triggers the body’s own healing process stimulating collagen and elastin, thereby reducing wrinkles, smoothing scars and improving overall tone, texture and color.
While this all may sound very painful, you should know that this procedure is well tolerated by patients and has minimal downtime. Most patients find that they can return to work later in the same day after treatment. Some redness may occur immediately after the treatment, but it is usually gone by the next day. General recommendations are four to six treatments every four to six weeks until desired results are obtained. A maintenance treatment is also recommended every six to twelve months. These recommendations can vary depending on the individual and the condition being treated.
Many factors contribute to aging skin. They include sun exposure, lifestyle, gravity and time. Visible changes of facial aging are lines, wrinkles, cheek droop, hooding of the upper eye lid, sagging neck and jowl formation. The facial aging process begins with changes on the surface of the skin and the tissue and structures below the surface. It not only includes the skin, but the fat, muscle and bone as well. Having the right amount of fat in all the right places creates a youthful look.
As we age, there is a redistribution, accumulation and atrophy of fat that can lead to facial volume loss. The forehead and cheeks are areas that lose fat while the mouth and jowl tend to gain fat. The fat pads in the face move further apart with age which makes them appear as separate structures creating contour deficiencies in the facial appearance.
Significant bone loss also occurs with age which may be due to bone expansion and resorption. Bone resorption leads to volume loss. Bone provides necessary structural support, and without it, there will be visible changes in the soft tissue and skin. Aging also brings a significant reduction in collagen and the skin becomes thinner, dryer, and less elastic.
Age related collagen loss weakens your skin’s inner structure, reducing its ability to maintain elasticity and moisture. Underlying changes that occur include the decline in collagen production, weakened collagen fibers and the loss of elasticity. The loss of collagen is a key factor in the aging process.
At Jordan Valley Dermatology we are happy to offer BTL Treatments and Sculptra Aesthetic. Both treatments initiate the body’s natural response to stimulate the growth of new collagen and strengthen the weak collagen to help lift, tighten and increase overall facial volume.
The BTL treatment is the only non-invasive procedure FDA-cleared to lift the skin on the neck, under the chin, on the eyebrow, as well as to improve lines and wrinkles on the chest (décolletage). It is a nonsurgical ultrasound treatment for lifting and toning the skin as well as rejuvenating and strengthening the collagen.
BTL bypasses the surface of the skin to deliver focused ultra sound energy at optimal depths, temperature and precision. Also unique to BTL is the use of ultrasound imaging, which allows the practitioner to visualize the layers of the tissue being treated to ensure that energy is being safely delivered to where it will be most beneficial. This energy initiates the body’s own natural response to strengthen weak collagen and stimulate fresh new collagen growth. The new collagen growth gradually rebuilds the dermal matrix lifting and tightening the skin. Results are gradual (4-6 months) and can last up to two years.
Sculptra Aesthetic is an injectable treatment made from poly-L-lactic acid. It has been used in Europe since 1999 under the name of New Fill. It was approved by the FDA in 2004 for the treatment of facial wasting especially in AIDS patients. Sculptra adds volume and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and folds and is often preferred to other dermal fillers because of its longer lasting results.
Once injected, Sculptra Aesthetic begins working deep within the skin to stimulate the skin’s own natural collagen production, reinforcing inner structure and restoring volume. Unlike dermal fillers, which only address lines, wrinkles and folds, Sculptra addresses collagen loss and skin structure. Sculptra works gradually over time with results that can last more than two years.
BTL and Sculptra complement each other very well! Multi-layer tissue stimulation occurs in the combination of these two non-invasive treatments. The stimulation of new collagen growth and strengthening of weaker collagen are what produce skin tightening, lifting and volumizing. Individually, each treatment provides its own antiaging effects, but together the results over the next several months will be gradual, natural and amazing with long lasting results.
